How to rebuild your credit score after debt review: a 12-month plan
A clean slate after debt review — here's your 12-month plan for what comes next.
Question: How do I rebuild my credit score after debt review?
Finishing debt review can feel strange. For years, you've been focused on paying debt down. Then suddenly you have a clean slate — and you're wondering: "Now what?" The answer is NOT "Go and apply for five credit cards." Your first goal should be to prove that you can manage money without relying heavily on credit.
Months 1–3: Stabilise
Step 1: Check your credit profile
Make sure the debt-review information has been correctly updated after your clearance certificate. The NCA provides for the relevant debt-review information to be removed once the clearance certificate is received by the credit bureau.
Step 2: Don't rush into borrowing
You don't need a new loan simply because you can qualify for one. Give your budget room to breathe.
Step 3: Build an emergency fund
Even a small amount every month is better than immediately reaching for credit when the car breaks down or the kids need something unexpected.
Months 4–6: Build good habits
Pay every account on time. Keep your monthly commitments manageable. Avoid unnecessary applications for credit. And most importantly: don't confuse a higher credit limit with financial success.
Months 7–9: Use credit carefully if you actually need it
If you genuinely need a credit product and qualify for one, understand the cost before signing. Pay on time. Don't max out available credit. And don't take credit simply because someone says "This will improve your score." Your overall financial behaviour matters.
Months 10–12: Review your progress
By now you should be able to answer:
- Am I paying everything on time?
- Do I have emergency savings?
- Am I living within my income?
- Am I using credit because I need it or because I'm short of cash?
- Could I handle an unexpected expense without taking another loan?
That's the real goal.
Your credit score is not the finish line.
A healthy financial life means being able to afford your life without constantly borrowing to survive. Debt review should not teach you how to borrow more. It should teach you how to manage money differently.
