How long does debt review take in South Africa?
"How long does debt review take in South Africa?" Honest answer: it depends on your numbers — here's what actually determines your timeline.
Question: How long does debt review take in South Africa?
This is one of the first questions almost every client asks. And here's the honest answer: there is no single fixed number of months that applies to everyone. Your timeframe depends on things such as:
- How much you owe
- Your income
- Your living expenses
- Your affordable monthly repayment
- The interest and terms of your debts
- Whether your circumstances change
- How quickly the debts are paid
- Whether you make your payments consistently
The NCR specifically states that there is no fixed timeframe for how long a consumer remains under debt counselling; it depends on the consumer's individual financial circumstances.
But isn't there a 60-business-day period?
Yes — and this is where people often get confused. The 60-business-day rule relates to important parts of the application/restructuring process, not to the total length of your debt review. The NCA provides specific rules around what can happen after 60 business days, including circumstances in which a credit provider may give notice to terminate a review where the consumer is in default. It does not mean "Your debt review will be finished in 60 days."
So how long could mine take?
Someone with relatively manageable debt and a strong repayment amount may finish considerably sooner than someone with a large amount of debt and a lower affordable repayment. That's why anyone promising "We'll get you out of debt in exactly X years" without first understanding your numbers should make you cautious.
The goal isn't just speed.
The goal is a repayment arrangement you can realistically maintain. Because a plan that looks fantastic on paper but causes you to miss payments three months later isn't a successful plan.
