Debt Review vs Debt Consolidation in South Africa
If you've been asking "what's the difference between debt review and debt consolidation" — here's the plain-language answer.
Question: What's the difference between debt review and debt consolidation?
They sound similar. They're not.
Debt consolidation
Debt consolidation generally means taking one new loan to settle several existing debts. Instead of paying credit card, personal loan, store accounts and other debts, you have one new consolidation loan and one monthly repayment. The NCR describes debt consolidation as applying for a single new loan to combine different debts, with that loan paying off the existing debts.
Sounds simple, right? But here's the important part: you are still borrowing money. You need to qualify for the new loan, and you need to be able to afford the new repayment.
Debt review
Debt review is different. It is a formal debt-relief process under the National Credit Act for consumers who are over-indebted. A registered debt counsellor assesses your financial position and, where appropriate, proposes a restructuring of your debt repayments. The arrangement can be confirmed through a consent order or court process. You aren't taking another loan to pay your debts. You're restructuring the debts you already have.
So which one is better?
There isn't one answer for everyone. If you can comfortably qualify for and afford a consolidation loan, consolidation may be an option. If your problem is that your existing debt repayments are simply no longer affordable, debt review may be worth investigating. The important thing is not to choose based on a Facebook advert promising "One easy payment!" Choose based on your actual affordability.
One very important difference
While under debt review, a consumer generally cannot take on further credit until the relevant debt-review process has ended. The NCA restricts further credit while a consumer is in the debt-review/rearrangement process. That restriction is actually part of the protection. It stops the cycle of: Borrow → repay debt → borrow again → fall behind → borrow again.
